Repentant bandits in Zamfara State, on Friday, surrendered four more assault rifles and military camouflage to the state police command, the spokesman of the command, SP Muhammad Shehu said in a statement.

The arms and ammunition surrendered by the repentant bandits included one LMG Military rifle, one Ak 47 rifle, two LAR rifle, ten rounds of live ammunition and
military camouflage.

This brought the total number of rifles submitted by the repentant bandits to nine.

In June this year when peace was brokered between them and Yan Sakai, the repentant bandits willingly submitted two rifles, while three other guns were submitted to the police in August.

“Today being 30th August, 2019, the Commissioner of Police Mr Usman Nagogo and his team for peace and reconciliation have achieved another landmark progress in ensuring that the peace process did not only stop at releasing captives but all arms and ammunition and other offensive weapons are surrendered by bandits and other militia groups.

“To this end, some bandits, who have renounced banditry and other criminal activities, have surrendered four different caliber of arms and ammunition to the Commissioner of Police,” he said.

He further stated that, following the trust and confidence built by his committee, bandits were now dealing with deviants among them who are not ready to accept the peace process and have become the eye and ears of security agencies and the government in the forests.

While at the government house to display the weapons to governor Matawalle, Mr Nagogo thanked the governor for being honest and hardworking, which assisted the security operatives in the discharge of their duties.

He promised to work tirelessly to ensure that the people of Zamfara State are always sleeping with their eyes closed.

In his response, Governor Bello Mohammed Matawalle thanked the Commissioner of Police and other security chiefs in the state for standing by his government’s polices and programmes, especially the ongoing peace process.

He promised to do all it takes to ensure peace and stability in the state.
