MINNA – The twenty-year-old security man, (Mai-Gadi), Shehu, has been arrested by the police in Niger State for allegedly conniving with fellow security man to kidnap the son of his employer, a retired Controller of Customs, Garba Mohammed Adi, in Minna, the state capital.

It was gathered that Shehu who lived in the same house with his employer as a security man, along Dutsen Kura-Gwari area, western by-pass, Minna, was said to have on Monday evening taken his employer’s ten-year-old son, Abdallah Mohammed Adi Yaro, after deceiving the boy to escort him on an errand.

Abdallah followed happily but unknown to him, the security man who was being fed and clothed by his father and whose school fees were being paid by the same family had connived with another security man to sell him off, it was reported.

Our correspondent gathered that the security man took Abdallah to nowhere in particular as he communicated with someone on his mobile telephone, through Keteren-Gwari road and they later ended up somewhere at London Street where he met and handed him over to another security man who was said to be his friend.

Trouble, however, started hours later when it was time for dinner, the parents could not find Abdallah who usually joined his father, a businessman to eat and none of his playmates, including children from the neighbourhood he usually played with, could account for his whereabouts.

Probing what could have caused the boys’ delay in coming home for dinner among his friends, one of Abdallah’s playmates quickly remembered that he was last seen with the Mai-gadi, 20-year-old Shehu and that prompted the search for the security man.

The retired Customs Officer was said to have sent for Shehu who ordinarily should be at his duty post at about 10 O’ Clock in the night but he was said not to be immediately available in the compound or at his duty post thereby fueling more fears as to what was going on.

Shehu came in a few minutes later and when confronted with the question on the whereabouts of Abdallah, denied knowledge of the lad’s movements, claiming that he had not seen the boy since they returned from school with his friends earlier in the day.

After much probing and threatened by Mohammed to report to the police, Shehu owned up and further confessed to his employer how he had taken Abdallah to a fellow security man somewhere in London Street, Minna, but could not give any convincing reasons (s) why he left the boy behind.

Shehu was to have made his way to run out of the house out of fears that he could be lynched as people from the neighbourhood started converging to ascertain what was amiss, but was caught before he could escape from the compound.

Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Niger State Police Comand, Abubakar Mohammed, confirmed the kidnap attempt, explaining that both Shehu and his accomplice in crime were helping the police in investigations.

The PPRO said, “We have a case of kidnap reported to us on Monday evening at GRA police station involving one Shehu, a security man working for a retired Customs Officer Garba Mohammed Hadi somewhere at Dutsen Kura-Gwari.”
