The Borno Government has moved some 9, 000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in schools in Maiduguri to other facilities to enable students to return to classes, an official has said.
The Executive Chairman of the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Alhaji Ahmed Satomi, made the disclosure to newsroom in Maiduguri on Wednesday.
Satomi said the IDPs were evacuated and transported to Bakassi and Dalori camp in Maiduguri with the aim of re-opening public schools closed within the state capital.
“The IDPs were occupying schools like Government Girls’ Secondary School Yerwa, Government Girls’ Secondary School, Maiduguri, Women Teachers’ College, Arabic Teachers’ College and Government College.
“We are trying to reunite them with their families. This is the first time the government is allowing the men and their families to live under one roof.
“It is our responsibility to safeguard the IDPs; we have befitting tents for them according to their family sizes.
“Our hope is that the 23, 000 unaccompanied children in the IDPs camps find their parents among the displaced persons.’’
He said: “Many IDPs who ran to neighbouring countries, like Chad, Cameroon and Niger are gradually returning.
“Those from Gamboru who ran to Fotokol were also found and will be transported to the state capital to reunite with their families.” (NAN)
