#BringBackOurGirls(BBOG) group member, Dr Allen Manessah has urged non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and public spirited Nigerians to help in the provision of food for Internally Displaced Persons(IDPs) in the various camps in the North East.
Speaking during an interview yesterday, Dr Manessah expressed anguish over the state of most IDPs in the camps adding that in recent times most IDPs were living without food and water.
Dr Manessah who expressed happiness over the report that government will release 10,000 tons of grains from the national strategic grains reserve for national distribution in order to counter food price increases, stated that such action will help the IDPs a great deal.
He however called on local and international NGOs and well-meaning Nigerians to cater for children and vulnerable individuals in the camps who needed food to eat before the release of the grains.
“The IDPs in recent times are having problem of feeding. The issue of food is a big challenge now. Thank God the grains released by the federal government will soon be at the camps.
“But before then, they need NGOs and public spirited individuals so that children will have food to eat, especially those that are in the recovered territory of Banki, Bama, Gamboru Ngala, and Damboa. They have nothing and they need food. Some of them need water and there are no hospitals in place.
“Government should intensify action and revitalise important government institutions in these places in order for the IDPs to feel at home before the real reconstruction and rehabilitation begins,” he said.
Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the release of 10,000 tons of grains from the national strategic grains reserve for national distribution in order to counter food price increases.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, said in a statement in Abuja that the president had also directed the Minister of Agriculture to ensure that all the able-bodied men and women in IDP camps be assisted to return to farming immediately.
He said the presidency was putting in place plans for one million poor and vulnerable Nigerians to soon receive monthly payments of N5000 to allow them live decently.
