The Livelihoods and Economic Assessment 2016 Report, conducted by OXFAM Nigeria has revealed that four states in the North East are in urgent need of food intervention following the devastating effect of insurgency.
In the report which was commissioned by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) OXFAM listed the four states as Borno, Yobe, Gombe and Adamawa states.
Presenting the Key findings of the report in Abuja ,yesterday, Oxfam Humanitarian Manager, Olayinka Afolabi said, “majority of households lacked sufficient food, spent more than they earned, and spent an
average of 42 per cent of their earnings on food.”
The Report added that “skilled labour in the focused states dropped from 21 per cent-to 5 per cent, while 23 per cent of households are headed by Women(widows),
40 per cent of them are pregnant or lactating, 61 per cent without access to improved
water, 55 per cent without sanitation devices, 11 per cent support a member with disability or mental or physical disability while 21 per cent households support at least one member with chronic illness.”
The Humanitarian manager added that the report also showed that the economic situation of households are diverse and called for tailored strategies to aid the coping mechanisms of the diverse communities.
The report added that over 80 per cent of the households spent more than they earned, while over 30 per cent were economically inactive. Afolabi called on governments and development agencies to urgently ensure increase level of food security and food self-reliance, sustain and improve access to basic social services and community infrastructures, creation and stabilization of livelihoods and economic opportunities for social economic recovery and the promotion of social cohesion and local participation to strengthen community resilience and mitigate the effects of the protracted crises.
