The Oluwo of Iwo, Oba AbdulRasheed Akanbi, has blamed the increasing crime rate on neglect of children by parents and the society.
Oluwo said this in an interview with our correspondent on Sunday.
He said the neglect of children by their parents during their growing up years was one of the reasons why some youths were into drugs, cultism and armed robbery.
The monarch, who was based in Canada before he was installed as the monarch, said he organised the Greater Iwo Empire Children’s Day to celebrate with kids and give students in Iwo and surrounding communities a sense of belonging.
The monarch said pupils from public and private schools converged on the playground of the Bowen University, Iwo for the march past and other activities to commemorate the day like their counterparts in other places.
According to him, children who do not have a good childhood always grow up to be menace to the society as adults.
He said, “I decided to bring all students together to celebrate with them in order to give most of them a sense of belonging. Many parents do not have time for their children any longer and that is why crime rate is on the increase.
“Many leave their children in charge of housemaids and television programmes and that is not good enough.
“Some children, even those who had become celebrities, were discovered to have been abused when they were children and this is having a negative impact on them as adults.”
He said he believed that the children he celebrated with this year would grow up to be responsible adults in 20 years to come, saying this would be his joy and would make his reign a memorable one.
The monarch urged parents to create time for their children so that they could be brought up properly.
