Acting Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris has said the Nigeria Police is reorganising and restructuring the Police Mobile Force (PMF), the Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) and the Special Protection Unit (SPU) as well as the Border Patrol Unit, to make them more responsive to the security needs of Nigerians.
He said already, the Nigeria Police ‘X’ Squad, the Police Special Fraud Unit (PSFU), the Inspector-General of Police Special Investigation Panel (SIP) and the monitoring units have been reconstituted and re-invigorated to lead the fight against corruption and abuse of office in the country.
Idris, who spoke yesterday in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, at the Police Lawyers Forum (PLF) breakout session of the on-going 56th annual national conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), said henceforth, the Police Special Units will be deployed strictly in accordance with the security needs of the communities.
The Acting IGP, who was represented by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) incharge of the Force Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department (FCIID), Mr. Hyacinth Dagala, said the deployment of these special units to guard individuals, businessmen and private companies not entitled to police guards, have been reviewed to ensure that policing efforts are concentrated on securing the entire society rather than few individuals.
He said, “The Police Special Units such as the Police Mobile Force (PMF), the Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU), the Special Protection Unit (SPU) and the Border Patrol Unit are being restructured and reorganised to make them more responsive to the security needs of Nigerians. They will be deployed strictly in accordance with the security needs of the communities.
“This will ensure cohesion, unity, stability and economic development of the country.
