The Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), also known as Shiites, yesterday in Kaduna held a mass protest again, asking the Federal Government to release its leader, Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky due to his deteriorating health.
Members of the group dressed in black apparel marched round Kaduna metropolis carrying flags and paraded various streets and highways chanting Islamic slogans demanding the unconditional release of El-Zakzaky.
Armed policemen escorted the group to ensure that the protest, which caused heavy traffic in the metropolis, was peaceful.
Addressing journalists on the reason for the protest, a top cleric of the movement, Sheikh Abdulhamid Bello condemned the continued detention of their leader, which he described as illegal and a violation of his fundamental human rights.
Bello said the IMN would not compromise its agitation for El-Zakzaky’s release, adding that the mass protest was the beginning of actions planned to ensure respect for his fundamental rights.
He called on people to continue to speak against impunity and disregard for law and order by the
Nigerian government.
Bello stated that “the detention of El- Zakzaky and also denying him the right to medical attention despite his deteriorating health is an outright violation of the tenets of democracy and civility and must be condemned by all.”
