The House of Representatives yesterday initiated a move to improve security in all the airports nationwide.
To this end, the House mandated it’s Committee on Aviation to liaise with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and other regulatory authorities to faction out efficient and modern techniques of detecting armed persons within the precincts of the nation’s airports.
Deputy chairman House Committee on Federal Capital Territory ( FCT) Sergius Ogun, while presenting a motion, titled ‘Urgent Need for the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria to Strengthen Security and Checks at the Nation’s Airports’ noted that the world had, in recent time, witnessed occasional plane crashes, which claimed hundreds of lives.
According to Ogun, many of the crashes were attributed to terrorist attacks.
Ogun who represents Esan North-East/South- East federal constituency gave vivid account of how a suspected terrorist was disarmed at the Murtala Muhammad Airport .
According to him, the suspected terrorist, who concealed three pistols strapped in a bandaged hand and successfully wheeled to the point of boarding along with a bag loaded with different types of ammunition.
It took the observation of the airline hostesses who alerted the Pilot and eventually called for the immediate intervention of the security agents who whisked the suspected terrorist away, thereby averting another national disaster.
