No fewer than 43 surrendered Boko Haram terrorists have been airlifted to Gombe State by the Nigerian Army and the Nigerian Air Force to begin a de-radicalisation and rehabilitation programme, codenamed Operation Safe Corridor.

This is just as troops shot dead four other insurgents, including three female suicide bombers, who attempted to attack a troops’ location in Kawuri in the Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State on Saturday.

Our correspondent learnt that the 43 terrorists in Gombe would join others to “immediately commence a de-radicalisation and rehabilitation programme” according to the Theatre Commander, Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru.

Attahiru called on other insurgents to “abandon the futile struggle and reject the hypocrisy of the Boko Haram leadership who live in affluence, while their foot soldiers die in hunger.”

Meanwhile, four Boko Haram terrorists also surrendered to the troops of 27 Task Force Brigade, saying they escaped from the hideouts in Kafe, Njubulla and Buk in the Damboa Local Government Area of Borno State.

However, a suspected Boko Haram logistics supplier, 43-year-old Hassan Yusuf, was arrested by troops.

The suspect, a Chadian, was arrested in a Toyota Hilux vehicle with registration number AE646VBY from Benue State.

The Director, Army Public Relations, Brig. Gen. Sani Usman, said in a statement on Sunday that the surrendered terrorists in Gombe took advantage of the Federal Government’s grace for repentant insurgents to surrender to military locations close to them.

Usman said, “The troops recovered from the insurgents 10 bicycles, nine bags of flour, nine sachets of yeast, two bags of groundnut, 50 sachets of salt, 16 torches and a cash sum of N2, 260.”
