The security situation in Ukanafun and Etim Ekpo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State has continued to deteriorate with the latest kidnap of a former Councilor in Etim Ekpo by unknown gunmen.

Hon. Idongesit Silas Udokang, ex-Councillor Ward 10, Etim Ekpo Local Government Area was allegedly abducted in his girlfriend’s house in a neigbouring village, Obon Ebot.

A source said: “The hoodlums stormed the lady’s compound in Obon Ebot village, on motorcycles and took the former Councilor away at gunpoint. They have contacted the family and demanded for N1million.”

The source regretted that a security, Joint Task Force (JTF) tagged ‘Operation Purge’ launched by state police command to dislodge the hoodlums in the area appeared to have collapsed.

According to the source, the neigbouring villages including Udianga Enem, Abak Obong, Okoyo, Ikot Mkporikpo, Otoro, Uruk Ata 11, Ikot Udobong and Ikpe, have been invaded with cultis.

“They broke into two compounds thursday and carted people’s belongings in the wee hours of the night in Udianga Enem village, forcing people to escape into churches.

“Some policemen posted on routine surveillance are now on the Ikot Mkporikpo and Ikot Nya portion of the Etim Ekpo-Iwukem highway, to extort monies from motorists,” the source lamented.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Elkana Bala, declined to comment on the development, saying he was no more the PPRO of the command.

“Right now, I have been posted to Eket to stay there briefly before returning the headquarters in Abuja,” he asserted.
