Collision of two commercial buses, yesterday along the Lagos/Ibadan expressway, left 26 passengers dead on the spot, while 11 others sustained degrees of injury from the mishap.
Checks by The Guardian revealed that the accident, which occurred around 7.00am near the Quarry site area on the Ibadan end of the expressway, involved two 18-seater buses attempting to overtake each other from their lanes at a diversion created by the construction company handling rehabilitation works on the road.
The collision immediately sparked off an inferno that consumed the passengers trapped inside the vehicles, even as some were burnt beyond recognition.
A combined team of officers of the Nigeria Police and Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) evacuated the victims, just as sympathizers at the scene wailed at the gory sight of victims’ remains being dumped into the rescue vehicle.
The remains had been deposited at the Adeoyo Hospital Mogue at Yemetu, Ibadan for autopsy, while the injured were taken to the University College Hospital and Ibadan central hospital for treatment.
Oyo State Commissioner of Police, CP Abiodun Odude, later visited the scene in company of some officers, even as the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Oyo State Police Command, Superintendent of Police, Adekunle Ajisebutu, confirmed the incident.
