No fewer than five persons were feared killed yesterday in a battle of supremacy between two rival cult groups in Osogbo, Osun state capital.
Besides, several others who sustained various degree of injuries were reportedly receiving treatments in various hospitals in the town.
Though the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Fimihan Adeoye, said only one person was killed and dismissed the claim that five persons had lost their lives in the battle, unconfirmed report indicated that no fewer than five persons lost their lives in the battle.
The running battle for supremacy took a very dangerous dimension yesterday when the warring groups “Eye confraternity” and “Ayee, confraternity” engaged one another in fierce supremacy battle using dangerous weapons to assert their supremacy.
They indiscriminately employed the use of weapons such as guns, machete, broken bottles, clubs, knives among others leaving innocent residents of areas like Oja-oba, Otakiti, Igbonna, Egbatedo and Ayetoro scampering for dear lives..
Commercial activities were paralyzed in the areas affected as shop owners closed down while the affected areas were deserted by people.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police disclosed that, about seven persons had been arrested in connection with the ugly incidents and that the arrested ones are already giving useful information to the police.
The police boss further affirmed that, the fleeing cultists would be apprehended and appealed to members of the public to go about their normal businesses as the situation has been curtailed.
