Nnewi—Six people, yesterday, lost their lives while over 20 were injured in two accidents that occurred at Onitsha.

The first happened at Upper Iweka by Lagos Park, Onitsha, Anambra State, when a fuel-laden tanker rammed into vehicles at the park, killing two and injuring more than 10. The second accident happened at Omagba Phase I, killing four people, injuring another 10.

The accident at Upper Iweka occurred when a tanker was said to be descending the Onitsha-Enugu Expressway from the Army Barracks end of Onitsha towards the Niger Bridge Head, but lost control, skidded off the expressway, crushed some vehicles and jumped over the drainage that separates the expressway from the service lane, where it crushed two to death and injured over 10.

Officials of Onitsha Unit Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, and policemen took the victims to nearby hospitals.

When Vanguard visited the scene of the incident, men of Willie Work Force, WWF, led by their Commandant, Mr. Obinna Ajaegbu, were towing the tanker and other vehicles out of the road.

The Omagba Phase I accident, which occurred four hours after the Upper Iweka one, involved an articulated vehicle laden with glass.

It was said to have occurred at about 2p.m. off Olo Street Omagba Phase 1, when the container-laden truck hit two commercial vehicles, killing four and injuring 10.

Contacted, the Onitsha Police Area Commander, Mr. Yahaya Abubakar, confirmed the accidents, adding that there was loss of lives, but that he does not know the actual number of casualties.
