The special investigation panel set up by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), yesterday, commenced investigations into the alleged  extra judicial killings by prison officials during the attempted jail break in the Abakaliki Federal Prisons, Ebonyi State  on 18th of August, 2016 in which many inmates lost their lives while others sustained various degrees of gunshot injuries.

It would be recalled that there was attempted jailbreak at the Abakaliki Federal Prisons which  caused pandemonium in the state, leading to the setting up of the  special panel by the commission.

The special panel is also investigating the alleged presence of lunatics, infants, pregnant women and nursing mothers in the yard.

The five- man investigative panel will spend four days  in the investigation.

Speaking at the prisons headquarters Abakaliki yesterday during its  opening ceremony, chairman of the panel, Barrister Anthony Ojukwu said the committee was given the mandate to investigate the killings and injuries that occurred at the botched jailbreak.

He noted that the panel is also looking at the case of inmates with mental illness, infants and women who are also in the prisons.

Ojukwu explained that a person with mental illness is not supposed to be in prisons but should be taken to hospital for medical attention.
