Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has set up a panel and ordered police reinforcement to end Monday’s violence between herders and farmers over land in Zadawa village in Misau Local Government Area.

The governor suspended the local government caretaker chairman, the deputy chairman and council secretary over their inability to control the situation.

Announcing the suspension at the Government House, Bauchi, the governor said an administrator would be appointed to take charge of the council.

He promised that his administration would not hesitate to take a decisive action to avert future occurrence of such incident.

Mohammed said, “Looking at all the information at our disposal, we have decided that some decisive measures must be taken in order to avert the re-occurrence of this very ugly situation which we know is also brewing in other local governments and the Government of Bauchi State will take a decisive decision to make sure we nip them in the bud.

“But in this particular case, we have decided to suspend the caretaker chairman of Misau Local Government Area along with his deputy and secretary to appoint an Administrator in the person of Isa Kufai, who was a former Chairman of Toro LGA.

“I have directed the commissioner of police to mobilize a mobile unit under his control and move to Misau, along with his colleague, the commandant of the Nigeria and Security and Civil Defense Corps, so that we can provide security on the interim.”

The governor added: “We also met with the stakeholders, some cabinet members, his royal highness, the emir of Misau, the district head, officials of Cattle Breeders Association and security agencies on how to avert the re-occurrence of this very ugly situation.

“As a result, I have set up a 13 man investigative panel headed by Air Commodore Tijani Baba Gamawa to immediately look into the situation and submit its findings within the next three weeks.”

According to the International Crisis Group, in 2018 the conflict between herders and farmers is six times deadlier than Boko Haram, with a death toll of 1,949, almost double the record the year before
