Gunmen suspected to be bandits disrupted voting in Oroji village of Rini Ward of Bakura Local Government Area, Zamfara State, Northwest Nigeria,  on Saturday during the bye-election for the state assembly seat, according to a report.

Daily Trust quoted Sulaiman Muhammad, a voter who was at the scene, as saying that the incident occurred around 8:30 a.m. when polling was about to begin.

“Immediately when the electoral officers arrived for proper preparation of voting to start, some gunmen from the forest arrived at the polling unit to disrupt the process,” Muhammad said.

“Both the voters and the INEC (electoral)  officials took cover for safety as security personnel launched an attack on the bandits,” he said.

At polling unit 008, Shiyyar Galadima in Rini village, security operatives fired into the air to restore order after a pandemonium caused by bandits, the report said.

Crisis also arose when the State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Yahaya Gora, former commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Muttaka Rini, and the PDP State Zonal Vice-Chairwoman, Hajiya A’i Maradun, arrived at the polling unit.

After security personnel calmed the situation,  voting continued, the report said.
