Fear has gripped Imo residents following the consistent spike in the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the state. As at 7.00pm yesterday, the number of confirmed cases of the virus in the state stood at 268.

The State Chairman, COVID-19 Prevention and Control Task Force, Prof. Maurice Iwu, had while briefing journalists last Thursday, said Owerri municipal had the highest number of cases, followed by Owerri West.

He blamed the spike on non-compliance to the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Nigeria Centre For Disease Control’s (NCDC) guidelines. Meanwhile, the Executive Vice Chairman, National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), Prof Mohammed Haruna, has said the agency’s desire to save Nigeria’s scarce foreign exchange and prevent capital flights was the reason for the manufacturing of the locally made disinfectant sprayers to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

Haruna disclosed this yesterday when the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) commissioned the use of the disinfectant sprayers tunnels manufactured by NASENI in all its offices.

According to him, the reason for manufacturing various spraying devices was to make it suitable for use in disinfecting various locations.Haruna said NASENI as an engineering and technology development agency realised that in times of emergencies like this, the society would have to rely on its science and engineering community for solutions.

He said that was why the agency came up with disinfectant solutions before Nigerians begin to look for them abroad. Haruna said: “NASENI as a responsible Federal Government agency assembled its crop of engineers to assist the nation tackle further spread of the virus by coming up with a range of disinfectant sprayer devices like Disinfectant Sprayer O tunnel, Disinfectant Sprayer U tunnel, the Single Chamber Sprayer and hand-held sprayer. There is the disinfectant sprayer mounted on tricycles, trucks and Hilux vans, including a locally manufactured ventilator. The agency desires to save Nigeria’s scarce foreign exchange.”
