At least, one person was confirmed dead when two rival cult groups clashed in the Owaelu-Uratta in Owerri-North Local Government Area of Imo State on Saturday night.

A source in the community, who spoke to our correspondent on condition of anonymity, said trouble started when rival cult members started exchanging provocative words.

The heated arguments, it was learnt, later degenerated into a clash, with guns and machetes freely used.

The clash, the source stated, made residents to flee to neighbouring towns for safety.

He said, “Two cult groups engaged themselves in a gun duel which has brought unrest to our community. For the fear of being harmed, we had to abandon our houses in search of safety. We slept outside our homes last night. We learnt that some of them have died from the clash. “

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Andrew Enwerem, said one of the cultists, Aka Dengo, was killed in the clash.
