A power drunk police officer covering the by-election to fill the vacant seat of the Warri-South Constituency 1 into the Delta State House of Assembly on Wednesday assaulted The PUNCH correspondent in the state, Mr Ovie Okpare.

The officer attached to the Counter Terrorism Unit otherwise called Red Beret of the Nigeria Police Force meted the unprovoked attack on Okpare while trying to gain entry into the Nana College, Warri, the was the collation centre for the Wednesday’s by-election.

The incident occurred at about 8:05pm.

The police officer, whose name is C. Lanson, lost his cool the minute our correspondent identified himself as a The PUNCH reporter alongside Egufe Yafugborhi of the Vanguard, and pounced on him.

Lanson threatened to shoot the correspondent even as he used his belt to beat him.

He said, “You say you are pressmen. I’ll not allow you to come into this place because you people will come in and go out to write what you did not see. Leave here! I say leave here!”

It took a call from the molested reporter to the Delta State Commissioner of Police, Mr Zanna Ibrahim, who was fortunately at the venue before the violent police officer was called to order.
