No fewer than eight persons died in a crash on Sunday evening on Hadejia-Kano Road in the Kaugama Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
The accident involved a KIA car with number plate, AS30DBT, and a Honda Sport Civic, with number plate, ZAK238AA.
PUNCH Metro learnt that five other persons sustained varying degrees of injury in the accident.
A source in the Federal Road Safety Corps, Jigawa State Command, said the KIA was at top speed and wanted to overtake the Jeep, which resulted in a head-on collision.
He said, “The accident was caused by the KIA car. It was speeding and wanted to overtake the Jeep. The driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the Jeep. Only the driver died while other fatalities were inside the Jeep. Their corpses have been deposited in a morgue.”
Adamu Abdullahi, the spokesman for the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps in the state, said he and his men assisted in rescuing the victims.
“Our men were returning from Hadejia when the accident happened and they assisted in rescuing survivors and taking those who died on the spot to a nearby hospital,’’ he said.
The FRSC Sector Commander in Jigawa, Angus Ibezim, urged motorists to install speed limit devices in their vehicles to forestall such incidents.
