ENUGU—Nineteen out of 30 kindred units in Obuno Ndi Uno autonomous community of Akpugo in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State have alerted of impending war if the state government goes ahead to impose a traditional ruler in the community.

The 19 kindred faction of the community, who protested at the Enugu Government House gate, yesterday, however pleaded with Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi to nip in the bud, the looming crisis by conducting an election into the community’s vacant Igwe stool and save the community the trouble.

The protesting members of the community were, however, told by Governor Ugwuanyi’s security aides to shelve the protest for Thursday in view of the visiting Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Mohammad Sa’ad Abubakar III.

In their petition to Governor Ugwuanyi, the community alleged that the Ministry of Chieftany Matters in the state conducted a purported verification of candidates for the stool in another community outside Obuno, raising fear of possible imposition of a particular candidate, Chief Jacob Nwatu against their preferred candidate, Prince Okwudili Agbo.

The protesting members of the community are also asking the state government to set aside a purported constitution of the community which they said is contrary to sections 2, 3, 4(1), 5, 6 and 7 of the abolition of Osu system laws of revised laws of Enugu state.

They urged the state government to comply with section 17 of the traditional rulers laws of the state 2004 which accords rights of equal treatment to all contestants in the process of ascension to throne and reschedule the verification of contestants or conduct outright election among the contestants.

“May this letter be treated as a passionate plea to save our dear community Obuno Ndi Uno from communal  war as the said Kangaroo verification exercise done on 30th November 2016 may lead to communal war.

“We urge you to immediately cancel the purported verification exercise and set a new date for a proper and just verification and or a general election,” said elders of the community in the petition to Governor Ugwuanyi.
