The scourge of erosion hitting the Alpha Beach area, before Lafiagi village in Lekki, Lagos has swept away dozens of the last remaining coconut trees, where their dense root zone were affording crucial protection in the region, close to the Nigerian Conservation Foundation (NCF) reserve.
However, efforts of the Lagos State government to protect the shoreline from Victoria Island all the way to Alpha beach by erecting granite sea groins are highly commendable.
According to foremost environmentalist, Desmond Majekodunmi, the erosion will always continue eastward of the groins, due to the west to east ocean current flow. “It is imperative that these groins are erected all the way down the coast or we shall be courting a disaster of unprecedented proportions on this fragile coastline where the shoreline beach buffer between the ocean and the low lying inland area of Lekki is now only 30 metres in some places.
“Global warming and climate change that are causing sea level rise and more violent storms are making the situation even more of an emergency that must be addressed urgently.
“We have started an initiative with the local community to put in place a temporary protective measure with thousands of sandbags and we are planning a rally to launch a media campaign to ‘Save the Lekki coast’ on Saturday, April 29 at noon. We shall be assembling at the NCF HQ at Chevron roundabout, Lekki at 10:30a.m. and from there we shall go to the nearby erosion site.”
