The Nigerian Police has confirmed a fire outbreak that gutted many shops at Ekene Workshop cluster of Polythene Factories located at Awada in Idemili North Local Government Area (LGA) of Anambra State, South East Nigeria.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Anambra State Police Command, SP Haruna Mohammed, in a statement on Wednesday said the fire started at about 10:10pm on Tuesday.

Upon receipt of the distress, Mohammed said, Police Patrol team attached to Awada Division led by the DPO CSP Tony Adeyi rushed to the scene and cordoned off the Area for rescue mission and to prevent looters from taking advantage and Steal.

He said that thr Fire Service department was contacted but before their arrival, the fire was eventually contained through concerted efforts by the Community  who rushed to the scene and put off the fire.

“Preliminary inquiry revealed that the fire was suspected to have emanated from electric spark which affected about 22 shops, Several types of machinery, finished products, raw materials and other properties whose values are yet to be ascertained were destroyed,” he stated.

The PPRO recalled that Similar incident occurred at the same location sometimes in February, 2018.

He said investigation is ongoing to ascertain circumstances surrounding the incident.
