Chidiebube Okeoma, Owerri
Three gunmen on Friday attacked a Chinese national who had just stepped out of a branch of Diamond Bank on Item Street in Owerri, the Imo state capital.
The robbers made away with the 10 million Naira he withdrew in the process.
The rampaging gangsters shot the expatriate believed to be a Chinese contractor working in the state and killed his police orderly, an inspector.
Our correspondent was told at the scene of the incident that the expatriate was attacked by the hoodlums, who were ambushed him immediately he finished his transactions in the bank.
A source told our correspondent, “Immediately the man was driven out of the bank premises in his black Toyota saloon car, the gunmen who were already waiting in another vehicle, double-crossed his vehicle. Two of them jumped out of their car and attacked their target swiftly.”
He said that the police orderly was shot because he resisted them, while the foreigner sustained a gunshot injury in his leg.
Only the driver was not shot.
When our correspondent arrived the scene, there was a heavy presence of policemen within the bank premises.
There was a drama at the scene as a suspected car thief identified as Chidozie Onyeahala, apparently used the advantage of the rowdy scene to attempt to steal a car parked on the premises of the bank.
The owner who sighted him from afar, raised an alarm. The suspect took to his heels but was nabbed by the police officers who ran after him.
The state Commissioner of Police, Chris Ezeike, confirmed the incident.
“It is unfortunate that we lost an inspector while the expatriate was shot. But I have directed all heads of tactical units of the command to apprehend the armed men. The manhunt has begun. We believe that the expatriate was trailed to the bank,” Ezike said.
