An Assistant Superintendent of Police, Celestine Onwumere, has been shot dead by gunmen, who attacked the Orie Mbieri division in the Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State two months to his retirement from the Nigeria Police Force.
Sources told The Punch that the police officer was due for retirement in December 2016.
The gunmen gained access to the station on Friday through the fence, opened fire on the policemen on duty and took to their heels.
Onwumere was reportedly relaxing in a police patrol vehicle on the premises when the assailants descended on him.
A police source said the officer was shot when he resisted an attempt by the gang to snatch his rifle, adding that they might have also come to free some suspects detained at the station.
“It was in the process of dragging his rifle with his killers that he was shot and he died on the spot. He was the Head of Patrol and Guard Unit of the state. He was the President-General of his community, Isuokporo in the Isu LGA, Imo State.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Andrew Enwerem, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, confirmed the death of the ASP, saying it was an armed robbery attack.
