Six days after some herdsmen attacked Ndiagu Attakwu community, killing two persons and injuring others, the police in Enugu yesterday arrested an AK47-wielding Fulani herdsman.
The suspect, 20, identified as Ibrahim Adamumale, was nabbed at Affa, Udi Local Council of the state, in possession of the weapon and 24 rounds of live ammunition.
The Police Public Relations Officer in Enugu State, Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed the incident in a statement, said “the suspect claimed he is from Nasarawa state, but lives at Hausa quarters, 9th Mile, and that he is a herdsman with some cows.”
He said the suspect was arrested on Monday by the combined efforts of the police and members of the public from Affa, acting on a tip-off.
“The suspect, before he was nabbed, had expended about six shots in the air to evade arrest, but he failed due to the superior effort of the police and members of the public, who have gathered information about his antecedents in relation to using sophisticated weapon within Affa axis and its environs.”
Stressing that the suspect was now helping the police in their investigations as to how he came about the rifle, he assured residents of the determination of the police to stem the tide of attacks from herdsmen.
It would be recalled that an attack by herdsmen last week at Ndiagu, Nkanu West council left two dead including a Catholic seminarian with three others severely injured.
