Uyo—COMMUNITY leaders in Eket Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, met yesterday to brainstorm on recent security challenges occasioned by the activities of herdsmen operating in their communities. They called on the state government to intervene in the situation.

The community leaders in their separate remarks at the meeting condemned the continuous harassment of innocent citizens and residents especially women by the herdsmen.

Armed Fulani-herdsmen

They noted that the increasing cases of armed robbery and other related crimes in the past months have become worrisome and urged the residents to be more vigilant and to report suspicious and strange movements in their respective environments to security agencies in the area.

Chairman, Transition Committee Eket council, David Archibong, advised the village heads to ensure that they complement government’s efforts by ensuring safety and security in their respective villages.

Archibong, who is also Chairman of ALGON in Akwa Ibom State, noted that the clashes between herdsmen and indigenes as well as the harassment of women in the area must not be overlooked, adding that efforts should be made by government to bring perpetrators to book.

He stressed that all hands must be on deck to ensure that Eket was not infiltrated by hoodlums, adding that no society thrives in an unsafe environment.

He said, “One of the primary responsibilities of the village heads is to ensure maintenance of law and order in their respective communities. I am calling on you today in view of the increasing clash between Eket indigenes and Fulani Herdsmen to complement what the government in collaboration with security agencies in the state are doing in protecting life and property.”

The Village head of Iseyiridua and Chairman, Conference of Village Heads in Eket, Obong Solomon Eyire, thanked the council chairman for organising the meeting bothering on current insecurity challenge facing Eket.

He said that the influx of Fulani herdsmen into Eket area in recent times calls for concern and appealed to the state government to do everything possible to check the influx, adding that they have continued to threaten to harm their people.
