No fewer than 139 victims of human trafficking and suspected traffickers, including those handed over by Nigerienne security personnel, have been rescued in the last three months by the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) Katsina State Command, the state comptroller of the NIS, Mr. Mohammed Rabiu Yaro, has said.
Yaro, who confirmed this on Monday at a press briefing in Katsina, revealed that the command had launched investigations into the foiled bid of a Kano-based driver to use APC posters with the pictures of President Muhammad Buhari and Kano State Governor to hoodwink security operatives along Kano – Kano highway to move five suspected victims of human trafficking, aged between three and 28 years, across the nation’s border.
He said the driver, Mohammed Rabiu Auwal, 41, ran out of luck in the process of stop and search operation mounted by immigration personnel in Daura.
According to him, the mission of the suspected victims – a housewife, her two children aged three and four years old, with two others – was to cross the Nigerian border through irregular route to Agadez in Niger Republic for onward journey to Libya and finally to Europe.
The comptroller assured that the commitment of the command to effectively man the nation’s expansive border in the state following the provision of necessary logistics and improved welfare to motivate the officers and men of the service.
