Olaide Oyelude, Katsina
TRADERS at the Dankama border market in Kaita Local Government Area of Katsina State spent the better part of Tuesday counting their losses after an afternoon fire gutted their wares on Monday.
During the incident, properties, foodstuff and livestock estimated at millions of naira were destroyed.
The border market deals in foodstuff and livestock with traders from both Nigeria and Niger Republic patronising the market.
Northern City News learnt that the fire which started from the livestock section of the market was aggravated by the dry harmattan wind.
Although no life was lost, shops, a mosque, foodstuffs, farm equipment and a caterpillar were completely burnt.
Three persons were, however, said to have sustained severe burns while a donkey lost its life where it was tethered.
The Serki Fulani of the market, Bishir Amadu, described the fire incident “as a disaster which claimed millions of naira from us.’’
He told the Head of the council, Hajia Uma-Abdullahi Mahuta, and the state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Alhaji Abdulkareem Zaka, who visited the market that the circumstances surrounding the fire remained a mystery to the traders.
The commissioner directed the council to submit the names of traders who suffered losses in the incident with the inventory of shops /stalls and property lost for compensation.
