The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has seized a truck laden with cannabis sativa in Uzebba, Owan West Local Government Area of Edo State.
The truck was reportedly intercepted at about 1am on Sunday by operatives of the state command of the agency.
It was learnt that the prohibited substance was being conveyed to an unknown location before the agency intercepted it.
The occupants of the truck were said to have fled into a nearby forest when they sighted the vehicles conveying officials of the agency.
The state Commander of the NDLEA, Buba Wakawa, who spoke to journalists while displaying the seized substances, said, “We receive intelligence that a group of people are loading cannabis sativa in a forest in Uzebba area. So, we mobilised our officers (and) they went for the operation.
“But because of the terrain, they (suspects) sighted the light from our vehicles coming and escaped. We had to tow the vehicle from Uzeba to our office.”
He, however, noted that while no arrest had been made, investigation had commenced to lead to the arrest of the suspects.
“We have got some vital links that will help us to track down those behind this particular movement. No arrest was made because it was in the night; they (suspects) sighted our vehicles and took to their heels.”
