The Oyo State House of Assembly has issued a 40-day ultimatum to the state Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Isaac Isola, and his counterpart in the Ministry of Works and Transport, Dauda Oladimeji, within which to check the growing rate of beggars and to improve on the state of roads in the state.
The ultimatum was issued by the Speaker of the Assembly, Michael Adeyemo, after the presentations made by both commissioners, who were invited to explain measures put in place to stop the destruction of roads by some people.
They were also invited to explain what their ministries were doing to address the increasing rate of street hawking and begging in the state.
The PUNCH had, on Monday, reported the invasion of Automated Teller Machine cash points in Ibadan, the state capital, by beggars and the concerns raised by some banks’ customers in the state.
In a paper presented at the plenary, the state Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources told the Assembly that the state government had concluded arrangements to engage stakeholders to address the concerns raised by the lawmakers.
He stated that that his ministry was working in collaboration with the state chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, the Association of Commercial Motorcycle Riders and the Oyo State Road Traffic Management Authority to ensure free flow of traffic in the state.
The commissioner explained that plan had been put in place to evacuate beggars on major streets in the state, adding that his ministry had set up environmental tribunal that would punish anyone found guilty of environmental offences.
While addressing the plenary, the state Commissioner for Works and Transport assured the lawmakers that the ministry would continue in its efforts to ensure that all road users complied with rules and regulations of driving.
The Speaker told the two commissioners that the interest of the people of the state and that of the lawmakers was to see actions taken to address the concerns.
Isola said the commissioners would be invited again after 40 days to know the level of progress on the issues raised.
