The Staffs of Federal Aviation Authority (FAAN) working at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) Abuja are in panic as one of their colleagues who returned from Kano tested positive to the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19).

According to sources who spoke to Global Sentinel, the fears were accentuated by the fact that the staff in question was asymptomatic but was honest enough to have subjected himself for testing by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC).

The source narrated: “Early in the week a staff of NAIA Airport returned from Kano though without any sign of the pandemic, but as a responsible staff that returned from a state with characterized with strange ailments he went to the NCDC Gwagwalada centre for COVID-19 test to be carried out.

“Though initially the NCDC turned him down because none of the symptoms was discovered on him, but he insisted that the text be carried out, then the doctor did and placed him on non-priorities.”

“Unfortunately, two days after the text the result became positive and was isolated at Gwagwalada Centre. Though the status of COVID-19 result of his immediate family that he travelled with has not be ascertained yet but they have been quarantine in their house awaiting the result.

This is the true situation of the misinformation of COVID-19 in the staff quarter. The particular block has been disinfected and efforts are on-going to disinfect the entire staff just like the entire terminals.”

Speaking to Global Sentinel, the General Manager, Corporate Affairs, FAAN, Mrs Hetty Yakubu, confirmed the case but assured that the situation is under control as the concerned staff has been quarantined and his house decontaminated.

Yakubu also disclosed that apart from the advisory being given by FAAN Doctors, the NCDC team is coming next week to decontaminate the whole FAAN Quarters at the Airport.

“The staff complained to the Doctor of how he is feeling and he was advised to call the NCDC, which he did. His house has already been decontaminated. Thank God that he is staying alone with his family but Doctors have been speaking with the rest of the FAAN staff to be calm as the NCDC team are coming next week to decontaminate the whole quarters”, he said.

She however, assured that the situation only affects the living quarters while guaranteeing that the Abuja Airport is safe with all the necessary safety measures put in place and observed by staff on essential services.

“It did not affect Airport operations as this only took place at the Staff Quarters. Even though there are few flights allowed for medical supplies and other essential services but all the necessary protocols and safety measures are being observed. Those staffs on essential duties are advised to wash their hands, wear face masks and take all the precautionary measures,” she assured.

Meanwhile, an official of the NCDC also assured that “response measures would be initiated accordingly”.
