Two illegal miners from Paikoro Local Government Area of Niger State were shot dead on Saturday evening by the policemen from the Kafin-Koro station.
The incident allegedly occurred when miners attacked policemen deployed in the site after the death of seven illegal miners at the site.
Our correspondent learnt that the illegal miners, who have ignored warnings by both the state government and security agents to desist from their illegal activities, mobilised themselves to attack the policemen.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, said the police had sealed off the site.
Bala however, warned all those involved in the illegal mining activities across the state to desist from such act or face the wrath of law.
The identities of the killed miners were not known as at the time of filing this report.
The miners were allegedly armed with some dangerous weapons, which they used to attack the policemen, injuring one of them.
The Niger State Governor, Abubakar Bello, recently expressed concern over illegal mining in the state with particular reference to Shikira village in Kagara, Rafi Local Government Area of the state.
“It is high time our people desist from engaging in illegal mining, it has devastating effect on their health, environment and economy is un-quantifiable,” Bello had warned.
