Within the last week, about five policemen’s lives have been cut off by armed robbers while they were on patrol duties to secure lives and property in the state.
The one that is most appalling are the policemen from Efut Police Division who responded to a distress call at Mount Zion by Goldie Street at 6pm. The distress call came to the patrol van along a filling station at Main Avenue Street and the patrol rushed to the scene only to find a police van parked across the road with a man sitting inside the van.
So, the cops parked and walked over to the police van to inquire from the man inside the van if he too came for the distress call. But the man bolted and scurried into a compound with gun in his hand. The policemen pursued and one of them called who took another direction by the left side came face to face with the man who bolted away from the van and he shot the police officer dead.
It was discovered by the police that the van parked across the road where this gun man bolted away belonged to the State House in Calabar ostensibly snatched (or perhaps a collaboration) by these robbers.
So far, police investigations are stalled and whenever suspects are arrested, they should be moved to Abuja for proper investigation and if there is any complicity between them and political office holders, they such would be made to face full the full wrath of the law.
Likewise, the police service commission should see to it that the families of those gallant police officers who died on duty are immediately compensated to encourage others who want to risk their lives in pursuit of criminals who are terrorising innocent people in the society.
The President should know that things are not right in Calabar. He needs to step in or else the problem will escalate.
