Policemen from the Federal Capital Territory Command on Thursday clashed with members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria, who were protesting against the continued detention of their leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky in Abuja.
The policemen fired tear gas canisters at the Shi’ite members during the encounter in which a policeman was injured.
Eil-Zakzaky was clamped into detention in December ,2016 after his followers blocked the convoy of the Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai and engaged soldiers in a violent confrontation which led to the death of over 300 Shiite members.
Chanting, “Free our Leader El-ZakZaky,” the protesters braved the tear gas fired by the policemen who blocked the Shehu Shagari Way and prevented them from accessing the three arms zone.
The incident paralysed vehicular movement on the road and motorists and other road users were forced to use alternative routes.
The FCT Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Mustafa, said the protesters were dispersed because they had no police permit to stage a public protest in the city.
He warned them against disrupting social and economic activities, adding that his command was well prepared and “possesses the necessary wherewithal to confront any threat to the existence of peace in the FCT.”
Mustafa stated that the protesters injured an aide to the FCT Deputy Commissioner in charge of operations, during the confrontation with police personnel.
Meanwhile, the FCT Command has re-united a three-year-old boy, Christy, with his parents.
The CP stated that the parents, Mr. And Mrs. Cletus Eze, had the child before they were legally married, adding that Christy was earlier in the custody of a non-governmental organisation.
