The early morning downpour on Sunday caused an accident on Oyo-Ogbomoso Road, Oyo State, which involved three articulated vehicles.
As a result of the accident, road users were forced to seek alternative routes to their destinations as the road was blocked for several hours.
Our correspondent learnt that two articulated vehicle drivers lost control of their vehicles after missing the narrow Olo Bridge, which had overflowed with water as a result of the heavy rain.
It was also gathered that another articulated vehicle rammed into the two vehicles, causing a gridlock.
A driver, Lanrewaju, who plied the road, said he had to pass through Ajawa town to reach Ilorin, Kwara State.
“I saw several articulated vehicles in a long queue. They were trapped on the road because of the accident. Some of the drivers of the vehicles had gone to the scene of the incident to rescue victims. Some of the people I met on the road said drivers of the vehicles involved in the accident lost sight of the bridge after it was overflowed with water,” Lanrewaju said.
Confirming the accident, the Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Police Command, Adekunle Ajisebutu, said no life was lost in the accident, adding that policemen from the command were mobilised to the scene to clear the road. He said the vehicles involved were “badly damaged.”
Also, Ajisebutu said the police command and the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, commiserated with the families of victims who lost their lives and those injured in the motor accident which occurred on Saturday along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
The accident, which claimed 26 lives and left 11 others critically injured, involved two Lagos and Ibadan-bound commercial buses coming from opposite directions.
