ABRAKA – STUDENTS under the aegis of National Association of Delta State Students, NADESSTU, Wednesday said they are giving the Delta State Government a one week ultimatum to take proactive measures against the activities of herdsmen in the state or else they would have no option than to occupy the State Government House, Asaba.

The students reacting to the killing of a staff of the Delta State University, DELSU, Abraka, Mr. Sunday Idama last Friday, appealed to the state government to take up the educational responsibilities of the children of the late DELSU staff and others who had fallen victim to the attacks of the herdsmen.

The students in a statement by the NADESSTU national President and Secretary, Shaka Emomine and Otuoraha Oghenekaro respectively, said they have no option than to relocate to the state government house if no proactive measures are taken to stem the tide of attacks by herdsmen in the university community.

According to the student leaders, “The incessant killing of our parents has become appalling and we are deeply concerned about this killing and destruction of property by herdsmen in our communities.

“Our forefathers and we the current generation have lived a symbiotic life with Fulani herdsmen who have depended on us as host communities for the provision of basic needs such as grains, shelter and indeed, husks from the harvest which have provided fodder for their animals.

“The sudden turn of events where herdsmen have abandoned this long mutually-beneficial relationship, by taking up arms against our parents and people is giving us a serious cause for concern. Some of our fellow students have been made fatherless, motherless and even some are now orphans because of Fulani herdsmen.

“This killing of our state owned university staff, a father of 14, has made it mandatory for us to cry out aloud to the Delta State and the Federal Governments to take decisive and proactive action in bringing this genocide to an end and its perpetrators to book.

“It is in the interest of peace that we call on the Delta State and Federal Governments to urgently intervene by putting a final end to the ongoing genocide by any means, take up the responsibility of Mr. Idama by ensuring that his family are well taken care of and ensure that all his children complete their academic studies to their desired level, likewise other victims too and direct all security agencies to be more proactive and be seen to be committed without bias at various strategic locations, in order to restore confidence in the minds of the victims.”
