One person has been severely injured in an alleged attack on Osissa community in Ndokwa East Local Government Area of Delta State by gunmen suspected to be herdsmen.
Our correspondent learnt on Sunday that the agrarian community was attacked on Friday and Saturday leaving one Mr. Lawrence Okutu in critical condition at a private hospital in Kwale.
It was gathered that more persons would have been hurt if the vigilance group in the area had not reacted swiftly to the attack.
A member of the community, Mr. Uche Agu, told our correspondent on phone that it was the third time the community had come under attack from the herdsmen.
Agu said the attack and others which had led to the destruction of crops had made farming in the area difficult.
Many residents of the community were said to have fled their homes as a result of the attack.
The acting Police Public Relations Officer of the Delta State Police Command could not be reached for comments as his phone was switched off. He has yet to reply a text message sent to him as well.
It was learnt that two herdsmen were later arrested by policemen from the Ashaka Police Station on Saturday while other members of the group were learnt to have fled with their cattle.
A senior police officer at the police station confirmed the development, but declined to be named as he was not authorised to speak about it.
The community called on the state governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, and security agencies in the state to come to their aid as they could no longer go to their farms owing to the fear of being attacked by the herdsmen.
