MAKURDI – A prison inmate serving at the Jato Aka medium prison, in Kwande Local government area of Benue state (name withheld) was Sunday evening reportedly gunned down by suspected Fulani herdsmen.
This latest killing came just days after Governor Samuel Ortom ordered armed Fulani herdsmen to leave the state.
Vanguard gathered from an indigene of the area that the inmate met his untimely death when he went to a nearby stream to take his bath and also fetch water for his personal use.
“The prisoner, was a middle aged man, he had gone to take his bath and fetch water at the stream in the area because the Jato Aka prison lacked basic amenities. Unfortunately while there, some herdsmen within the area with their cows sighted and shot him after which they fled.
“He died before the helpless prison warden who went with him could get medical attention for him.”
Vanguard gathered that the killing of the prisoner sparked angry reaction from fellow inmates who went protesting his killing, the poor condition of the prison facility and the treatment being meted out to them.
“The protest forced the prison authorities to evacuate the inmates to Gboko medium prison for fear of an escalation of the crisis.”
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent, ASP, Moses Yamu, who confirmed the killing explained that investigation into the matter had commenced.
