Tension is rife in Awka, Anambra State capital, as the two factions of Awka Council of kingmakers trade words over the purported deposition of HRM Obi Ezeuzu Awka, Dr. Gibson Nwabueze Nwosu, and assumption of office by Ozo Obuora Essel as regent of Awka.
A press release made available to The Guardian yesterday in Awka signed by the Chairman and secretary, Awka Council of king makers, Ozo James Eze and Chief Chris Onyeudo respectively, described the advertorial in some of the national dailies announcing the purported dethronement of HRM Obi Ezeuzu Awka, Dr. Gibson Nwosu, as sheer mischief and urged the public to disregard the publication.
But last Friday, another group, Awka council of Kingmakers had in a release signed by their chairman, Ozo Obuora Essel and Secretary Ozo Barr. Chief E.C.G, Okechukwu, dated, April 15, 2017, announced the dethroning of Obi, Ezeuzu Awka, Dr. Gibson N, Nwosu and the declaration of head of Ozo Awka, Ozo Obuora Essel as regent of Awka.
In their release, Ozo Essel and Ozo Okechukwu alleged that Nwosu was dethroned after he failed to come to defend himself from numerous acts of his, in violation of the code of conduct he signed January 1 2000, after he was crowned.
They listed some of the allegations to include, denying and refusing to defend Awka custom and tradition even though he is called a traditional ruler; formation of a splinter Kingmakers Council, formation of a splinter Ozo Institution which he calls Ozo Ife, loitering around government offices seeking personal favours, thereby not according dignity to the exalted position of Ezeuzu Awka, amongst others.
However, in defense of Ezeuzu, Ozo James Eze and Chief Chris Oyeudo, chairman said secretary, Awka council of Kingmakers argued that the removal of a duly elected and recognized monarch is a serious matter which must be based on grievous misconduct and strictly comply with laid down procedures.
While insisting that members of Awka council of Kingmakers has absolute confidence in HRM Obi Ezeuzu Awka, Dr. Gibson and pledge their allegiance to him, they called on Anambra State government to check the activities of these ‘rascals’ to avoid breach of the law and order.
