Nigerian troops on Wednesday, Aug. 25 thwarted an Islamic State West Africa(ISWAP) attack and recovered several weapons, military authorities said.

The attack occurred in Babaginda town of Yobe State, in the northeastern part of the country.

Photographs from the encounter show multiple Ak pattern rifles, one NSV heavy machine gun,  ammunition belt, and a former Niger Republic Police pickup truck.

“The criminals made a futile effort to infiltrate the town, but were met with a fierce counterattack from the vigilant troops, forcing them to retreat in disarray” said Onyeama Nwachukwu,  a Brigadier General and the Director Army Public Relations.

Nwachukwu added that the “troops captured one gun truck, one Dushka Anti Aircraft Gun, two AK 47 rifles and unprimed Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) from the fleeing terrorists. Further exploitation by the troops is still ongoing.”
