The 2017 edition of the Warri/Effurun Peace Marathon has been thrown open to national athletes who wish to participate in the race billed for April 29 in Warri, Delta State.
Athletes from other States were left disappointed last year, when the organisers shut them out of the prize monies. However, according to the race coordinator, Joyce Bozimo, athletes from outside Delta will be welcomed, since prize monies have been budgeted for them.
“Last year we made it clear that the race was for only athletes from Warri and its environs. But we were inundated by the number of national athletes who came for the event.
“We have now decided to accommodate the national athletes. There will be prize money for them and also the local athletes,” said Mrs Bozimo.
She disclosed that the State governor, Ifeanyi Okowa has given approval and support for the 10km race meant to promote peaceful coexistence among the different ethnic groups in the restive Niger Delta region.
