The chairman of the local organizing committee of the 3rd Pan-African Mosquito Control Association (PAMCA) conference, Dr Sam Awolola has established the fact that Zika virus, one of the deadly viruses in recent time is not new in Nigeria. He said the first case was diagnosed around 1978.
Awolola, while speaking with LEADERSHIP said Zika virus has been diagnosed in Nigeria for several years, adding that nobody should be worried over the virus as the country is prepared to tackle it if it surface.
He said, “It is not that we don’t know what the virus is or the vector that transmits it, but we have not be able to link it up with what we are seeing in Brazil and South America.”
Speaking on the recent speculation by Nigerians on the athletes that returned from Brazil, Awolola said government is prepared to ensure that the vector that transmits the Zika virus is identified across the different areas in Lagos State and Nigeria as a whole.
