The Acting Director of the Department of State Service (DSS), Mr. Mathew Seiyefa, may be forced to proceed on terminal leave in order to pave way to a predetermined choice by the presidency.
Sources revealed that originally Seiyefa was close to his retirement and billed to proceed on terminal leave at the end of August but the lot of leadership fell on him because of the unexpected sack of Mr. Lawal Daura.
Though preferred and appointed by the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo when he was acting for President Muhammadu Buhari but many within the Presidency viewed him as a stop-gap measure.
While Buhari reserved the power and right to extend his tenure and retain him but sources noted that the hawks within the Presidency might not be comfortable with Seiyefa’s reform agenda and being that they would prefer a core loyalist from the “core north” of the country.
Global Sentinel gathered that the acting DSS reform policies especially with the release of many victims of DSS detention without trial, most of who came from his home state of Bayelsa might have unsettled some forces within the presidency.
DSS in line with the reform policies promised by Seiyefa had appointed a substantive Spokesman, Mr. Peter Nnochiri, which was a departure from the three years Daura ran the agency without a known Public Relations Officer. In addition, report disclosed that some detainees were released including eight from Bayelsa who has been held behind bars without trial for over two years.
“There is serious pressure for Seiyefa to go”, the source said.
While the DSS failed to respond to inquiries to substantiate the claims but sources noted that the Presidency is seriously shopping for a replacement before the 2019 elections.

•Seiyefa was born on October 17, 1960. He is from Ekeremor, an oceanside community and local government area west of Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital.
•He attended Local Government Education Authority Primary School, Ekeremor. His secondary education was at Government College, Ughelli, in the neighbouring Delta State.
•He studied law at the University of Jos and graduated with honours in 1982. Afterwards, he attended the Nigerian Law School in Victoria Island.
• Seiyefa joined the State Security Service in 1984 when it was still known as National Security Organisation, shortly after completing his national youth service at the School of Islamic and Legal Studies, Kano.
•In his early years at the SSS, he was attached to the department of operations and legal. He was then posted to the SSS training school in Lagos, where he spent seven years.
•He once led the SSS Base Command, Lagos. From here, he was posted to the Institute of Security Studies as a director.
•Between 2007 and 2010, Mr Seiyefa headed the directorates of intelligence and operations.
•Before his new appointment, he was Daura’s deputy, being the most senior director in the DSS.
•He had served as the Director, Institute of Security Studies, Abuja.
•Seiyefa has about 34 years of experience on the job, and had also served in different capacities, including as State Director in Osun, Akwa Ibom, and Lagos.
